Don’t get us wrong, we’re huge fans of professional wrestling in its purest, most unadorned form: just two dudes in a ring battling for supremacy by pinfall or submission. But sometimes, when things get too hot for a normal match to handle, we have to escalate matters a bit. Enter the gimmick match, wrasslin’ lingo for any kind of contest that depends on a change in the rules, whether it be the erection of a titanic steel cage, the placement of weapons around the ring, or any of dozens of other wild and wacky ideas that have passed through the heads of promoters over the decades. In celebration of of the Championship Scramble matches at Unforgiven, we’ve compiled a list of our favorite gimmick matches of all time. From the basic and brutal to the complicated and crazy, once you’ve digested this list, you’ll be ready to rumble no matter what the rules are.

WWE is in the middle of making a big effort to make their B-show pay-per-views more unique and special. The top 4 pay-per-views are considered to be the Royal Rumble, WrestleMania, SummerSlam and Survivor Series while the rest of the shows throughout the year are B-shows. WWE wants to brand these shows over the next few years so they each have their own gimmick or distinct feature that makes them stand out. For example, One Night Stand is all extreme matches and Night of Champions has all Title matches. WWE officials are initially happy with the way the Scramble matches came off and there is talk that they could return next year. There is also talk that the Elimination Chamber will return at this year’s No Way Out, though that’s not confirmed.
Some may argue the authenticity of the sport, but there’s no denying that pro wrestling made one Allegany boy’s dreams come true.
