PIAA Wrestling District 9 Early Accomplishments

PIAA wrestling chapter, district 9 of Pennsylvania has been noted for some serious accomplishments.

For example, Joe Quethera from Clearfield High school in 1935 was recruited by Coach Art Weiss to become that schools first four year letter winner. He was the first 85 pound wrestler to take place in the PIAA wrestling matches, district 9 of Pennsylvania.

His nickname became "Jumpin' Joe" because he was able to quickly and aggressively jump from one move to another. He was only one of few of districts 6 through 9 to win a gold medal in the tournaments which he wrestled. The other two noteworthy people who joined Jumpin' Joe were Sam Harry and Sheridan Bannon. Jumpin' Joe and these other two men competed in the first wrestling championship in at the first Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association State Tournament in 1938.

Joe Quethera managed achieve a 28-9 career record with one season at a peak of 13-0. Later on in life he served in the military. It's no doubt he ever forgot his experience as a PIAA wrestling champion.

Frank Shirley is another man of PIAA wrestling history worth making mention of. He graduated from Clearfield high school in 1941. This man won over 92 percent of the matches he wrestled in with an overall career winning record of 37-4, with a dual meet record of 24-1.

He was the second man of his school to letter four years in a row and won 22 matches straight through during his last year as a wrestler (dual meets). He and the rest of the Bisons won three titles of all of district 6-9 and helped take the second Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association Championship. You can say he followed in his predecessor, Jumpin Joe's footsteps.

Bruno Iorfido was another PIAA wrestling champ from Ridgeway. He was a four-year champ and breaking numerous records of other wins that have taken place within 18 years. He also competed in PWAF Freestyle and one the Pennsylvania State Championship twice during his career, among other wrestling accomplishments.

These were only some of the highlights of the PIAA wrestling district 9's accomplishments. This district, along with the wrestling team members of districts 6-9 have won many titles and accomplished many feats.
