The IHSA Wrestling team has instituted a weight control program. This weight program began in the year 2003-2004.
One aspect of the IHSA wrestling weight program is that of the measurement of body fat. For men, the body fat proportion should be no more than 7% and no more than 12% for female wrestlers. Weight classes help students that want to compete in wrestling matches stay healthy and in shape for there own personal safety.
In order to enforce this rule, certified personnel that are not connected with the wrestling coach staff have been suggested to be the ones to be hired to test the body fat of wrestling students. For example, it has been determined that a school nurse (or health practitioner), health teacher or someone of similar expertise should be the ones to measure the body fat of IHSA wrestling students.
The main goal of this routine has been to not only that students are not at a health risk and overexerting themselves. This is a way for the school to intervene in a students life and a way to measure each competing student's effectiveness out their on the wrestling match.
Training sessions will also be set in place for students who want to manage their weight in order to be a part of the wrestling team. These sessions at the time of this proposal in the year 2003-2004 have started at 15.00.
Further studies have to be done regarding the effectiveness of these tests in years to come. However, it has been proven in times past that those who are healthy and in shape are able to compete better athletically. The IHSA wrestling organization recognizes this fact, and has taken action.
If a student or parent wants to learn more about the most current qualifications of qualifying to compete in an IHSA wrestling match they can go to the IHSA home page and find out. Also, they can contact the school wrestling coach as well to find out.
